June 2023 Plant of the Month for Boulder Colorado area landscapes

Silver Lace Vine

Boulder, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}

Silver Lace Vine or Polygonum aubertii is a low water, vigorous growing twining vine with delicate white flowers that show up in mid summer and last until fall. It needs some support to get going but will climb to 25’ or more. It is an effective screening plant and may need some pruning each year to keep it in check, but in the right location it can cover a pergola for more shade, or climb a fence with trellis for great privacy.

Be sure to give it the room it needs or its vigorous nature may become overwhelming. It likes full sun, but will tolerate some shade and still bloom effectively. Prune out the dead in the winter to control. It may be pruned to the ground or close each year as it can put out 6’-10’ of new growth per year in our Boulder Colorado landscapes. It is not invasive in Colorado due to our harsh climate, whereas in wetter areas of the country it can escape from cultivated areas and become a problem. For the right place, it can be the right plant.
