Coreopsis
Niwot, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}
Coreopsis contains several different species of flowering plants, some more lace leaf, and others that have more full foliage. Most will have yellow flowers, but some are pink, soft yellow, to full gold in color. Coreopsis makes a great cut flower due to its long stem and longevity once cut. It is generally a low water usage plant, but will need some regular watering to become established. They are generally 12-18” tall for the smaller varieties, but up to 30” tall for the larger. They like a well drained soil with full sun but can handle a little afternoon shade. At least 6 hours of full sun is best.
Coreopsis do well in our Niwot Colorado landscapes and will thrive in rock garden environment if given enough water. They generally do not spread by seed, but one variety, verticillata, or Moonbeam, will spread via rhizomes. Planted in mass, they will create a nice backdrop for ornamental grasses. They can suffer from winter kill and dyeback even though they are considered perennial in Colorado. Some are just generally short lived and will last several seasons but then need replanting over the years. Try some for a splash of yellow color in your perennial gardens.
