Honorine Jobert Anemone
Erie, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}
‘Honorie Jobert’ Anemone, or Anemone x hybrida is a late summer to fall perennial bloomer that will add a lush look to a part shade environment late into the growing season, even after first freeze. A medium growing 30-36” tall rhizome spreader, this hybrid of Japanese Anemone will like a more moist, rich, humusy soil mixture. Large oval palmate leaves give rise to 2-3” white flowers on tall spikey stems. It makes an excellent specimen for cut flower arrangements. In the right environment, it will spread and fill in as a ground cover. It may stay lower than the 36” height described, especially if it gets too much hot afternoon sun that we often get in our Erie Colorado landscapes. ‘Honorine Jobert’ is an old garden hybrid discovered in Verdun, France in 1858. It is commonly called windflower, of which there are many varieties, but this one has abundant late summer flowers that often waver in the wind and have a soft, calming effect.
It may get powdery mildew or leaf spot, and slugs might be a problem if it is too moist, but don’t let that deter a mass of them in the garden. It looks great when planted in large groupings, and often looks good with Hosta and Astilbe. Avoid abundant hot Colorado sun in the afternoon. It looks great in a cottage garden or in a woodland garden. Buy as flats of 4” pots to plant in mass for the best look. Keep evenly moist until established, then water less frequently but thoroughly. Mulch heavily in winter to protect from sudden temperature changes. Take your time, enjoy.
