The Crevice Garden

Crevice gardens are a new way to bring more native and drought tolerant plant material into the garden spaces and add some character to quiet corners. If you have a very hot and sunny and dry location, consider adding a crevice garden.
Built using angular pieces of mixed color flagstone of various thicknesses set on edge and buried in poor quality soil 2/3-3/4 deep, the crevices between the stones offer unique and tight spaces for small succulents and creeping groundcovers to flourish. In the examples, Hens-n-Chicks, various Stonecrop varieties, and a few low growing Sage are used between the crevices of the stones to create a vibrant display of color and texture. Sometimes Prickly Pear, or Sea Pinks can be used to add texture too.
The key to a crevice garden is that it is located in a hot and dry section of the yard, has poor quality, rocky soil, and then usually just gets covered with squeegee or pea gravel to ensure that it stays really hot. Ideal for Longmont, Colorado area gardens, the plants used in a crevice garden thrive on low moisture and hot conditions. We do irrigate with Maxijet irrigation stakes but those are used to get the plants established, and then for only occasional watering, if at all.
Be sure to angle the flagstone pieces slightly for the right look, and consider adding in a few small moss boulders for effect. If you need one in your landscape, be sure to let us know and we can help.
