Garden Sage

Garden Sage, or Salvia officinalis is June’s plant of the month. Gray green leaves and striking purple or violet flowers set off this very aromatic garden herb. It is often used, fresh, dried or cooked in cooking with meats, especially poultry and has edible flowers valued by herbalists. It grows 2’ tall and wide and thrives in well drained soils. It thrives in full sun. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers which are in full bloom in late May through June. It is a strong surviving perennial in our Boulder Colorado landscapes. Harvest leaves in spring or summer. Prune lightly but not into the woody stems. Pick flowers when near full bloom for cut dried flower arrangements. It is a must for any landscape or herb garden. Plant some today!
