Mountain Ash, Rowan, Whitebeam
Longmont, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}
Mountain Ash, Rowan and Whitebeam are common names for the Genus Sorbus, a common small tree and large shrub found native in the norther hemisphere, generally in Zones 3-7. It is native to cool temperate regions and is a member of the Rose family. It is known for its attractive flowers in spring and early summer, colorful fruit in late summer ranging from red, yellow, orange to white, and vibrant fall color. Varying sub species thrive in various locations from lowland woodlands to higher mountain rocky outcrops. Several are common in our Longmont Colorado landscapes such as Cardinal Royal and Oakleaf Mountain Ash.
Whitebeam is a rare species native to Ireland, Southern UK, and eastern and central Europe. It is rare in Scotland. In all there may only be 1000 or less in native habitats, but it is widely planted as an ornamental. It is unique in that it has white velvety undersides to the leaves that show in the breeze. All Sorbus can get up to 25-30’ tall and wide, and if left alone, will sucker into large shrubs. They like acidic or alkaline soils that are moist but well drained. They like full sun to partial shade. It can be prone to aphids, scale insects and fire blight on occasion. Several species of chinese Mountain Ash have beautiful pink berries in fall. All are great for attracting birds. Find the right spot for one in your garden.
