July 2025 Plant of the Month for Erie Colorado area landscapes

Princess Kay Plum

Erie, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}

‘Princess Kay’ Canadian Plum or Prunus nigra, is a medium to fast growing plum tree with a rounded crown and beautiful double white flowers in spring. It will grow 15-20’ tall and 10-15’ wide, so it will be a good fit for smaller Erie Colorado landscapes in new subdivision front or back yards. This tree should be given more attention because it performs well in our Colorado soils, is relatively disease resistant and deer resistant. Its fall claim to fame is the fabulous brilliant orange and red foliage in fall. It can be prone to minor suckering or seed germination, but is not offensive like other trees like Aspen for suckering.

Introduced in 2000 it has had 25 years to prove its worth. It is an underutilized tree that should be installed for its showy qualities. It likes loamy soil best, but can handle our clay soils with the right amendments. It likes moderate and consistent watering. The bark is also noteworthy. It is dark brown, smooth, and almost black with white spots that stand out in winter. The flowers are highly fragrant and show before the leaves in spring as double blossoms that start white and turn a light pink as they mature. Plant one or a grouping in your yard soon.
