September 2024 Plant of the Month for Erie Colorado area landscapes

Summer Sun False Sunflower

Erie, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}

Summer Sun False Sunflower or Heliopsis helianthoides is a golden, daisy like perennial flower with abundant dark green foliage that grows in clumps about 36”-48” tall and spreads to about 24”. They are native from Ontario to Florida and west to the Mississippi. They have large semi-double blooms and will bloom from mid-summer right up to the first hard freeze in our Erie Colorado landscapes.

They are medium water users, but their abundant foliage makes for a show stopper when planted in mass plantings, and they will handle drought once established. They are great for cut flowers as their stalks are rather long and easy to cut. They prefer full sun, about 6-8 hours per day or more and, to top it all off, they can handle our clay soils! They are also a great flower to attract butterflies, so if you are looking for a show stopper for your pollinator garden, consider a few of these mixed in.
