‘Heavy Metal’ Blue Switchgrass
Boulder, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}
‘Heavy Metal’ Blue Switchgrass or Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’ is a beautiful metallic blue ornamental grass that will add color and flair to any backdrop. It matures to about 4’ with spikey pink panicles or plumes in late summer/fall with foliage that matures to a bright yellow in fall. Planted in clumps or mass plantings, this striking color scheme can really accentuate the landscape. Fall color with this grass is striking. It requires minimal water and is hardy in our Boulder Colorado landscapes down to zone 4. It has a pronounced vertical habitat so clumps remain distinctive and won’t flop over like many other grasses late in the season.
Switchgrass was an important member of the western tallgrass prairie that once covered much of the Great Plains. Heavy Metal was cultivated first in the 1980’s and has gained in popularity due to its striking color and upright habit. It does best in full sun, but can take some partial shade. It is tolerant of most soils. It is an adaptable plant that does well as an erosion control plant on slopes due to its strong root system. Plant several in your landscape this season.
