April 2024 Plant of the Month for Lafayette Colorado area landscapes

Dwarf Pussytoes

Lafayette, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}

Dwarf Pussytoes or Antennaria parvifolia ‘McClintock’ are a very drought tolerant low growing groundcover ideal for rock gardens. It will create a silver mat and will thrive in the harshest of environments in our Lafayette Colorado landscapes. If you have created a succulent garden with varieties of Iceplant, Sedum, and other drought extreme plants, then this is a must addition to the landscape. It is reliable down to about -30F or zone 4a and needs little additional moisture once established than what nature provides along the Front Range. It is usually planted from flats of 2 ¼” or 4” pots, but can sometimes be found in #1 container sizes. It spreads some by rhizomes to about 12” or by seed, but is not a prolific spreader. It likes hot, full sun. White showy flowers rise from the low 1” mat to about 4” above the ground and will bloom from late spring to mid-summer. Winter desiccation can be a problem in very exposed areas, but it is mostly tolerant of extreme conditions in the area. It is a native to the western US. Plant some in your rock garden soon!
