Wall Germander
Broomfield, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}

Wall Germander, or Teucrium chamaedrys is a species of plant that is native to the hotter and more dry parts of Europe and North Africa. It is a member of the mint family, but is not nearly as invasive as mint. It has a nice smell when the serrated leaves are crushed, is extremely attractive to pollinators, and may try to stay evergreen during warmer winters in our Broomfield Colorado landscapes. It has been used as a medicinal herb to treat gout and is really an old school plant regaining newfound interest among xeriscape specialists for its drought tolerance and late summer blooming interest. It can be hard to incorporate late season color into a landscape, but this groundcover fits the bill.
Plant in well-drained soil, perhaps on a slope in full sun. It likes hot, dry conditions, but does require water to become established. A little winter protection is helpful by leaving leaves and mulch piled around it for the winter months. Snow cover acts as good winter protection. It can handle rocky, loose soils with minimal nutrients as it is native to the more dry areas of Europe.
Use the dried cuttings in potpourri or other dry arrangements for its fragrance. This plant works well on slopes for soil erosion control as well. Mulch well in winter to protect it from dessication. Plant some for fall color now and enjoy for years to come.
