Blue Cranesbill Geranium
Longmont, CO area landscapes {Plant of the Month Series}

Cranesbill Geranium is a winter hardy perennial bedding plant that is often planted in woodsy type settings as it does well in shade and sun. Since there are over 400 species of geranium, keeping it simple in this article is best. They will seed themselves, spread as groundcover and fill areas nicely. They are hardy along the Front Range and in our Longmont Colorado landscapes, but they can become gangly and overgrown. Use a few here and there to infill places in your perennial bed, but go easy. It likes moderate water and will tolerate many soil types, but a good amendment when planting is helpful. It blooms from late spring through the summer and sometimes into fall if kept manicured. They are easy to grow so are a good choice for the novice perennial gardener. Give them a good cut in the fall or spring during cleanup and they will thrive year after year.
