It’s been so so warm…go ahead and plant bulbs
Longmont, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series: January 2026}
Cannot believe how warm it has been throughout December 2025 and now into January 2026 in our Longmont Colorado landscapes. That said, let’s talk about when you can plant bulbs. Most will say that planting too late in the season is not the recipe for success because the plants don’t have time to set roots. In wetter climate conditions than Colorado, this might be a problem since the bulbs might rot over winter. However, as long as the ground is not frozen and you have bulbs, go for it. Bulbs do need a cold period called cold stratification to make them viable for sprouting, but they will get that in the ground in late January and February here in Colorado.
Give them a good soak and then water again a week later thoroughly and you will be surprised to find plants emerging from those bulbs in March. The rules are changing with a changing climate. Much warmer winters along the Front Range means altering the standard thinking. You can continue to plant later into December than ever before. It may be the new norm to wait on bulbs and garlic to plant in late December. Will you get burned on occasion? Yes. But experiment with our altered climate growing conditions. Landscaping and planting is about experimenting anyway. Be bold. Be brave. Plant bulbs (garlic too) in the dead of winter as long as the ground is not frozen!
