December 2025 Plant of the Month for Boulder Colorado area landscapes

Red Feathers Bugloss or Echium Amoenum

Boulder, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}

Do you need an upright leafy plant with spikey stalks that end in rusty red blossoms? If so, Red Feathers Bugloss is your plant. It does really well in our Boulder Colorado landscapes and thrives on poor rocky and well drained soils. It is not strongly perennial, so some flowers should be left to seed as it will seed readily. The main plant may or may not make it through several seasons, but the seedlings will thrive.

Red Feathers Bugloss has a strong, upright spike of a flower blossom to about 16” high and is rather leafy. Plant them in masse for the re-seeding to take effect readily. Water regularly, but not heavily as they are quite xeric. Plant with amended soil, but don’t be too particular about having lots of loam or compost in the mix. Grit helps. Bugloss works well as a border plant in the front of the beds, with taller yellows or burgundy behind. It looks quite good against a backdrop of Smokebush. Experiment with some this coming season.
