Montrose Spire White Spruce (Picea glauce ‘Motrose Spire’) is a beautiful conical shaped or even columnar medium sized Spruce. It is short needled, and has a tight and compact design that makes it a must for small spaces. It is more compact than the cousin Montrose Charm White Spruce. It comes available every decade or so. This one seems to be arriving in Colorado again at wholesale nurseries for planting in our Boulder Colorado landscapes. The blue green needles add a stunning contrast to other evergreens.
Montrose Spire thrives in full sun, is ideal for USDA zones 3-7 and will maintain its compact upright form. It will handle a variety of soil conditions, though any evergreen will not like its feet wet continuously. It will grow to 6-10’ wide and 20-30’ tall in 30 years or so. This makes it great for smaller yards where space is at a premium, but the desire for an evergreen tree is also at a premium. If you can find one, buy one and plant one.
