Slab Stone Steps add character and functionality

Erie, Colorado area landscapes {Monthly Series}

Large slab steps are a great feature to add to your landscape. If you have a slope that is difficult to navigate, or even an area off a patio that you frequently jump off of, slab stone steps can make life easier. There are several methods and products to solving the slope issue. Options for stone around here are natural face steps that may or may not be cut to fit on the sides and back side which are usually hidden in dirt, fully cut slabs which are snap cut on all sides, or built stairs using moss rock as the riser portion, and flagstone as the treads. These pictures illustrate all three. Another place slab steps are sometimes needed is at entrance doors to homes, usually sliding glass doors or side doors. The front is usually completed in concrete by the builder.

Slab steps are not easy to install due to their weight. Glacier View will remove concrete steps at sliding glass doors or at side doors, and can install beautiful slabs to complement patios or other outdoor spaces. Most of our installations are done without heavy machinery, using rollers and push bars and a bit of “Egyptian Engineering” to get the slabs in place. This allows us to work in tight spaces and minimizes damage to existing landscape during the install process.

See if your landscape could benefit from easier access using slab steps or other types of stairs built into your landscape. They are a great addition to existing sloped chip stone walkways that tend to wash out, leveling the spaces between the stairs and allowing rainwater to have a gentler path and less erosion. Invest in your hardscape this season!
