The one most often seen in our Boulder Colorado landscapes is Ipomoea purpurea. It grows as a vine and is considered invasive in almost all areas of the US. It is even illegal to cultivate, posses, or sell in the state of Arizona. Related to morning glory is the very invasive bindweed that all of us in Colorado are familiar with pulling up relentlessly. However, if you do find the common morning glory growing in your yard, you might as well keep it going, but keep it in check. It likes moist rich soil, but will thrive in almost any environment as long as it gets some moisture. The one pictured here grows on it’s own with a little overspray from the lawn irrigation system. Seeds can sometimes be found at local nurseries, but it might be tough to find unless you go online. This is not a plant that landscapers will regularly plant, but its attractive flowers and heart shaped leaves do lend to a nice display. Flowers bloom in the morning and fade by afternoon. The vine will climb to 10’ on a trellis, fence or arbor. Watch for it sprouting in undesirable places and you won’t have a nightmare down the road.
